Currency in Ireland
The currency in the Republic Ireland, as with most of the European Union, is the Euro €.
Note: The currency in Northern Ireland, as a member of the United Kingdom, remains Sterling. Since Northern Ireland is physically connected by an open border to the Irish Republic, many businesses north of the border will also accept the Euro.

Banks, ATMs & Currency Exchange
The principal banking organisations in the Irish Republic are Allied Irish Bank (www.aib.ie), Bank of Ireland (www.bankofireland.ie), National Irish Bank, permanenttsb (www.permanenttsb.ie) and Ulster Bank. All now have online banking services for registered customers. In addition, there are numerous smaller banks and building societies. All the banks have Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) which accept each others cards, as well as accepting credit cards and foreign bank cards within the Cirrus and +Plus systems. Check each machine for the relevant symbol.

Any bank in Dubln will exchange your money. If you have travellers' cheques to exchange you must have your passport with you when cashing the cheques. In general, banking hours are 10am-4pm Mon-Wed, 10am-5pm Thur and Fri. Along with banks most building societies and post offices do foreign exchange. Also department stores such as Brown Thomas (Grafton Street, Dublin 2 - grid O50 on map l49o51), Arnotts (Henry Street, Dublin 1 - grid N47 on map l46o48) and Cleary's (O'Connell Street, Dublin 1 - grid O47 on map l46o48) have bureau de change facilities in shop and many larger shops accept the major foreign currencies such as dollars and sterling.

Travellers' Cheques
If you are staying in Ireland for a while, it is a good idea to take travellers' cheques for safety - but make sure your bank gives you Euro € Eurotravellers' cheques and not Sterling pounds as used in the UK - unfortunately many seem to have difficulty realising that Ireland is an independent republic...

Credit Cards, Debit Cards, Laser
Most businesses accept American Express (AmEx), MasterCard (MC) and Visa(V), less so Diners' Club (DC). Increasingly, transactions are electronic, with the local debit card system, Laser, enjoying widespread use. Note that the UK-based Switch system is not accepted in Ireland.

In the event that your credit card is lost or stolen you can call into any bank to report the loss. You should do so immediately.
